Lane’s mother was my father’s sister.  I was very close to Lane while we were growing up.  Many of our cousins were older so those of us of the same age had a special bond.  I loved to go to his farm north of Lemmon and it was a special treat for me to ‘skip’ grade school in Lemmon and go with Lane and Daryl to the Beisigl School, a rural school out by their farm.  I have wonderful memories of spending time with ‘the boys’ and think of them often.  Memories in the heart will keep us close forever.      Charlotte (Friez) Schott

Lane Allen Hochhalter

January 8, 1952-July 17, 1995

After graduation, Lane attended NDSU in Fargo 1 year, transferring to UND in Grand Forks in 1972.  On July 8, 1972 he was united in marriage to Joyce Austin in Lemmon.  They lived in Grand Forks until 1974 when Lane received his degree in Business Administration.  A son Preston was born in 1974.  Following his college graduation they farmed with his father for one year, but because of health (Lane had dealt with years of a chronic disease of the colon) they moved to Fargo where he worked for Avco Financing Company.  Most of Lane’s career was in insurance sales.  Lane moved to Elbow Lake, MN and managed the Wendell Ins. Agency.  While there, he organized the Grant Co, MN Ducks Unlimited Organization and chaired it for 2 years.  In 1987 the family moved to Phoenix, AZ where Lane worked for the John Hancock Company, Color Tile and the Arizona Republic.  While in Arizona, he and Joyce divorced, but remained life-long friends.  The year before entering the hospital he completed his post graduate studies at the University of Phoenix.  While in the hospital, Lane had two liver transplants, the medications he had to take ruined his kidneys and he passed from this life Monday evening, July 17, at the age of 43 years.  His son Preston is now a police officer in the Phoenix area and his father, Ted, still lives in Lemmon.

Lane and his son Preston

This poem was written by Lane on July 8, 1972 and read at his funeral:

We have a dream of love.

We will look for it

in hidden places

of the future,

in the secret places

of our hearts.

And if the dream’s reality

is never wholly ours

it will not matter . . .

we will have looked with love . . .

we will have journeyed in joy!

To any of you that knew Lane or would like to write something on this page, please send it to me.  It would be nice to share some memories.

Mr. Serious and ironically, I think he had the best smile of our entire class! I will always remember his fancy graduation car and I got our family hand-me-down Plymouth station wagon!?!?! ~ Jean Butler

I agree, Lane always seemed so serious.  And his car, well I think I was driving an old hand me down Rambler!!  I remember Lane was always nice, I don't think I ever heard him say a negative word in four years. ~ Nette

This photo, taken in 1957, of the Charlotte, Lane and Daryl.  What one didn't think of, the other did - but we sure did have fun!
